Google PageRank
There are only a few websites available with a PageRank 10. By spending a bit time while doing some research on Google, lots of sites that were listed as a PageRank 10 are in fact a PageRank 9 as of January 6th, 2009 for instance, www.nasa.gov, www.bbc.co.uk and www.whitehouse.gov. The only PageRank 10 sites I came across today were www.usa.gov and certainly www.google.com!
A PageRank 10 is the Holy Grail of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). For a website, a PageRank of 8 or 9 is like being Superman in the middle of the normal human population. A PageRank 10 would seem to be like God Himself. When you think of the websites that are awarded the esteemed 9 or 10 ranking, it appear that giving unbiased information and being a eminent non-profit institution is really important.
For instance, seek out the BBC website. Why does this site entail that authority with Google? For one thing, the BBC is highly admirable and respected the world over. It is a firm that doesn’t respond to shareholders and doesn’t depend on advertising revenues to keep operational. In spite of its current string of dishonorable scandals, this provides the BBC an air of authority, which you wouldn’t discover on commercial news sites. Maybe this is why it is provided this authority by Google in the World Wide Web.
What’s a big deal in the SEO lesson for millions of mere-mortal websites with less impressive PageRanks? Well, as the PageRank algorithm is an intimately protected secret as it is often said that only 3 people are familiar with how the trademarked PageRank is calculated – Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and God, I can only largely muse on what it entails to be a perfect 10. For Google’s cream of the crop websites, on the other hand, there does appear to be some fundamental principles.
Enormous name acknowledgement and a worldwide brand that has been inflated over several years is one such principle. But possibly the most upsetting principle for all average Joe who has the ‘Search Engine Optimization for Dummies’ book and a dream is this: websites that offer valid information are ranked much upper than websites that look for making money.
